You know those days in a family--weddings, funerals, births--when everyone comes together and all that history and garbage fester and boil and sometimes explode?
Well, this is one of those days. Maggie is in labor.
When the first contractions ripple across her belly, she has no idea what to expect. She knows what she wants. She wants that perfect birth from the movies, with her family gathered around, welcoming her baby, helping her become the perfect mother.
More than anything, though, she wants her mother to be there for her, but relationships between mothers and daughters are often complicated.
Her husband Sam would do anything for Maggie, but as their families converge on the hospital for this birth, he can't keep the craziness at bay.
Through a series of flashbacks, as well as events in the labor room, Maggie digs more deeply into her painful past. Memories bubble to the surface, forcing her to re-examine the tragic accident that killed her baby brother. Relationships between mothers and daughters are often complicated. But in order to learn what it means to be a mother, Maggie finally has to face her own mother, and find a way to both forgive and be forgiven.

Motherline eBook Lisa Rosen Reviews
Great use of fiction combined with a true to life roller coaster of emotions.
This book is not just for moms or moms-to-be. The complexity of family relationships are relatable to everyone, and so is the main character, Maggie, who will have you rooting for her from the first page.
I thoroughly enjoyed Lisa Rosen's novel about the complexities of family and the pressures to be a perfect mother. A joyful event like a birth can bring secrets to light, and offer opportunities for healing. Look forward to the author's next book.
If there were a "labor and delivery" genre of fiction, Lisa Rosen's Motherline would be the gold standard. A tour de force, the novel is well written, complex, very realistic, and entertaining to boot. Every mother and mother-to-be will discover something of herself in Rosen's protagonist, and readers will find themselves encouraging, cheering, and maybe even breathing and pushing along with Maggie as she labors to give birth to her first child and also tidy up some loose ends with her own mother before giving herself over to motherhood herself. This is a novel that speaks to the very real and complicated emotions surrounding giving birth and becoming a mother. Rosen skillfully celebrates a difficult and beautiful subject.
Motherline is an amazing book...You don't have to be a mother to appreciate the "push and pull" in the family dynamics...They're always there......In Motherline Lisa Rosen has written a book that you can identify with in your own family.!!Or at least it will get you thinking...I recommend this book..as thoughtful, insightful, sensitive and well written...You'll enjoy it!! Let's talk about the elephant in the room There are no aliens or robots in this book. Not even a little bit.
What IS in this book is a lot of great imagery, even if it's difficult to read about at times. What I really appreciate about Rosen's writing is that she paints such a vivid image in your head that it makes it easy to visualize every agonizing moment for Maggie, even those moments that deal with emotional pain versus physical. A good book teases emotions out of you, even those we'd sometimes rather avoid, and that's exactly what you get with Motherline. Really well done.
Every mother has a birthing story, and we love to tell it. But Motherline is so much more than the story of a delivery; it's a story about life.
You'll find yourself pulling for Maggie, crying with her, and hoping she can figure out that though the bond between mother and child runs deep within us all, it is often thorny and rarely perfect.
Lisa Rosen tells Maggie's story with a natural rhythm. Her flashbacks are incorporated seamlessly. The details create vivid images, but the language is never distracting. You simply feel Maggie's physical and emotional anguish.
Read Motherline! You'll want to call your mom when you're done. I can't wait to read Rosen's next novel.
