Apex Predator is a military techno-thriller fused with elements of science-fiction horror. Set in the near future, a team of US Navy SEALs on a covert mission are hunted by a mythological creature as they flee across the polar icecap. The soldiers reach the submarine sent to rescue them but the chase has only just begun as they realize that their natural enemies cannot compare with the malevolent force that pursues them with vengeful intent.
As events escalate, a myriad of characters become drawn into the conflict;
The officers and crew of the USS Seawolf
A Chinese Special Forces commando
A shadowy intelligence agent
And formidable military might brought to bear against and ancient evil

Who will survive? Who will be the Apex Predator?

Apex Predator eBook Kelvin Kwa

An author I'd never heard of with only a couple of reviews (both 5 star) made me a bit wary about this book when it appeared among the recommendations from Amazon, but I was at a loss for something to read, and the concept looked like it might be entertaining, so I grabbed the sample. I wasn't sure what to expect.

And it hooked me, so I bought the book. And it was really darned good! Really really entertaining read. I'm not usually one to give 5 stars, but this book impressed the heck out of me. Part Hunt For Red October, part 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, part giant sea monster story, definitely a fun read.

My only very minor gripes are that it could have used a bit more editing. There were points where it felt like extraneous back story was being inserted that wasn't necessary to advance the story, didn't really add much flavor to the story, and/or seemed to be there simply to explain a convenient plot point that came up. However, these are rare and they definitely don't hurt much; you may just find your self skimming a few passages.

Otherwise, good characters, exciting special forces and exciting submarine action (don't know how accurate the descriptions of such action were, but they were certainly entertaining and suspenseful), and overall a really good read. It's well written with extremely few grammatical and spelling errors (only glaring one off the top of my head is in a later part of the book where a character is describe thus: "...did not make for good a good listener..."). Only a few parts drag but otherwise the story grabs you and pulls you a long.

I though I was taking a risk when getting this book, but I'm now certainly glad I did. Definitely check out the sample to see if it grabs you. If you like a bit of sci-fi with sea monsters and submarine naval action, you'll enjoy this book.

I'll definitely look forward to more from this author in the future. :)

EXCELLENT, THRILLS AND SURPRISES AT EVERY TURN
gotta give credit where credit is due. this is a great entertaining read especially for a first novel. can't wait for the next.
This story is a great start for a new author. The plot and action remind me of Reily or Cussler. Recommend this story highly. Lots of action naval and seal team with fantasy creature.Loved It. Rcw1714@yahoo
This book is the first for Kelvin Kwa and boy does he do an excellent job. I read the story over three nights, he keeps the story going at a fast pace for the full 649 pages, never a dull moment. Its about the American Navy, Chinese Navy and a very huge, scary, hungry sea monster thats hunting them. Well done Mr Kwa I look forward to reading more of your books.
I only bought this book because I met the author when he was accepting his Reader's Favorite award in Miami and I enjoyed talking with him. The book amazed me. I was completely in its grip until I finished it. The plot is not so far removed from reality that it comes across as fantasy and the characters are all people that I could recognize as real. I am deeply impressed with Mr. Kwa's work and expect to see more from him although I can't imagine him producing books like this very rapidly. This is a very big story but totally entertaining all the way through. Good job Kelvin!
Story is good but the author's repeated, and I mean repeated 13+ times, comparing the monster and characteristics to a train car, or freight train, or some other locomotive. It gets very excessive. Examples go from its "train car brow" to its "freight train scales". It's almost laughable if it wasn't so annoying and almost disturbing with the author's infatuation with trains. It's very annoying and slows the story down because you think to yourself "Again with the locomotive references?"
For fans of Clive Cussler, Matthew Reilly and Tom Clancy, once you get through this one, I'd not be surprised that Kelvin Kwa's name will be added to your list of favourite authors.

A very tightly edited storyline, reminiscent of something written from or for a blockbuster movie (except it's better than most if not all I've read, and I've read a fair few). In addition, Kelvin Kwa has spent some effort in fleshing out a lot of the characters, which is an excellent thing, as this allows the reader to be fully engaged not just with the fast and well-paced story, but also with the believable characters you will want to love, cheer and hate. A few minor edit issues, as pointed out by a couple of other reviewers, but this is only nitpicking and does not change my rating or the fact that I believe people will thoroughly enjoy this book. From the 1st couple of chapters, the story reins you in and does not let go. If you think the 600+ pages may be a "chore", you'll be yearning for more after you've gone through the book.

This book could easily be dissected for a movie trilogy. With the way it's written (reads like Kelvin Kwa was already picturing how it looks on screen), I would have thought not a lot of story/scene edits would be needed to put this on screen.

A very impressive debut novel, thoroughly enjoyed the read, and well worth the 5 star ratings of the reviewers before me. Look forward to more from the ex-"computer salesman"!!
