The American Revolution is replete with seminal moments that every American learns in school, from the "shot heard 'round the world" to the Declaration of Independence, but the events that led up to the fighting at Lexington and Concord were borne out of 10 years of division between the British and their American colonies over everything from colonial representation in governments to taxation, the nature of searches, and the quartering of British regulars in private houses. From 1764-1775, a chain of events that included lightning rods like the Townshend Acts led to bloodshed in the form of the Boston Massacre, while the Boston Tea Party became a symbol of nonviolent protest.
The political and military nature of the Revolutionary War was just as full of intrigue. While disorganized militias fought the Battles of Lexington and Concord, George Washington would lead the Continental Army in the field while men like Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia and Benjamin Franklin negotiated overseas in France. Benedict Arnold would become one of his nation's most vital war heroes and its most notorious traitor, French forces would play a crucial role at the end of the war, and the Treaty of Paris would conclude the Revolution with one last great surprise.
However, while the bigger pitched battles are well known, a lot of clandestine fighting and espionage took place behind the scenes, and it contributed to the results of the American Revolution.

John Graves Simcoe was a British citizen who came to the US shortly before the revolution broke out. It was interesting to note that he tried to work with George Washington. George Washington did not trust him and refuse to use him, so this gentleman joined the Queens Rangers. By the time the Revolutionary war was over most Americans wanted to hang him, and most British thought well of him. This book covers major Robert Rogers who formed the unit that Simcoe would ultimately lead. Simcoe fought in a number of battles including many were no mercy was given to the enemy or those assumed to be the enemy. Latter parts of the book covers Simcoe's life after the Revolutionary war. This book was an interesting read because I did not realize how deep the hatred was between the various colonists.Product details

Simcoe Rangers The History of the British Queen Rangers During the Revolutionary War (Audible Audio Edition) Charles River Editors Mark Norman Books Reviews
Excellently researched.
Having first heard of him on the TV show, I was glad to know he was a real person and to learn of his importance in our history and that of Canada.
An overlooked part of the Revolutionary War, until TURN came out. Gives an insight to just one of the many people involved in that time. A good and fairly quick read.
Simcoe is probably an obscure figure to anyone who isn't a big Revolutionary War buff, unless they also watch Turn, in which he is an entertaining antagonist. More importantly, this book shows how irregular soldiers engaged in guerrilla warfare during the Revolution, an overlooked aspect of the war.
