I always feel a little stab of sadness when I read a book that has a compelling premise, but it ends up having a disappointing delivery. Such is the case with Justice for Sara, one of the cheesiest thrillers I've read, ever.Look, I'm all for an old fashioned type of mystery with a limited set of suspects, a small town setting and a little side romance. But all of those are at best done in a mediocre way here, except for the romance which is right down dumb.
I'm going to start with the good point of this book. It's an easy, quick read. Umm I think that's it? I've been trying to think of something else to say, but nothing came to me.
Now for the bad... There's a whole lot of that. First, the writing is very basic. The author jumps between present time and ten years ago, when the murder of Sara McCall happened and her younger sister Kat became the main suspect. The "past" chapters are written focusing on the point of view of the different characters involved in the drama, which gives the readers a good chunk of information about them. I think this ends up damaging the story, because the mystery and suspicions vanish and it ends up being quite obvious who is the murderer way before it's revealed in the story.
We have our main character, Kat McCall, who might be the stupidest heroine I've seen in a while. Kat used to be a rebellious teenager who made all kind of bad choices until her sister died. The author seems to think that "her parents died when she was young!!" is explanation enough for Kat's behavior, but it's not. As her older self, Kat has a completely different personality but sadly her neurons didn't reactivate. She keeps doing shockingly moronic things all through the book. Seriously, she's the type of character you'd find in a cheesy horror movie, that would become the first victim of any slasher. It's hard to relate with such a brainless, two dimensional protagonist.
Then there's Luke, the conveniently young and handsome acting chief of the local police. He's described by our heroine as a "Hugh Jackman" type, which is a really poor description. Luke and Kat suffer of a case of insta-love and apparently it doesn't cross either of their minds the fact that their flirting and inappropriate relationship can ruin Kat's quest for justice for her sister and Luke's reopening of the case. Can you imagine what would happen in a trial if it was revealed that the chief of the police who caught a killer was in a romantic relationship with the main alternative suspect/witness? And I'm not exaggerating when I say it doesn't cross their minds. A few other characters mention it during an interrogation, but our dashing policeman never ever thinks "hey, maybe I should wait until after I solve this case to try to get into this woman's pants!". A true example of professional and trustworthy law enforcement.
The other characters are all stereotypical and several fall into the category of being there just as red herrings, but they aren't interesting at all. The resolution of the case, while obvious to the reader, comes out of nowhere for the protagonist, and the twist after the twist is sadly very foreseeable too. Perhaps the saddest part of all is that the titular Sara, who might be the most intriguing character of all, barely gets any time to be fleshed out and make us care about finding her murderer. Not much justice for her after all.

Justice for Sara by Erica Spindler
This thriller romance had quite a few twist and turns before the end. Very entertaining. You think it’s solved but still have quite a few pages left and realize there is another variable thrown in. I was kept entertained, involved and anticipating how it would all turn out. And the last one? Didn’t expect it. Erica Spindler is one of my favorite authors for spinning a good mystery. I was not disappointed here.
Katherine McCall is back in her hometown to get justice for her sister’s unsolved murder. The case is reopened by Sergeant Luke Tanner, the son of the original investigator. Can there be justice or is the killer just waiting for Kat to make the wrong move and make her the next victim.
Erica Spindler's back with her latest thriller that's out right now. In Justice for Sara, we're introduced to Katherine "Kat" McCall who returns back to her small town of Liberty, Louisiana, ten years after the brutal death of her older sister. And it's not easy, when everyone's out to get here, when she was acquitted for her death and moved away. While she's looking to have a brand new start for her bakery business, old friends and foes make her hard on her. With Sargeant Luke Tanner on her side for her own ally, these two have a powerful chemistry together that's explosive. Together, they uncover the truth of her sister's death and who killed a police officer on the same night. The closer she's to the truth, the more attempts on her life to drive her away. In a small town, she discovers the hard truth on who's a friend or her foe with lies, and a devastating mind-blowing family secret that exploded right open. In the end, she does get justice for her sister and won't ever look back again.
Are you ready for suspense, murder, mayhem, edge of the seat plots that suddenly go awry? I've read most of Erica Spindler's books and they are hard to put down. The heroine is a strong person but she has her weak moments. Who wouldn't with a very masculine acting sheriff in the plot. Any romance should be forbidden because of her background with the former sheriff and the acting sheriff's connection to him too. Even if you think you know who did it...you better wait... Erica has too many plot twists and turns to be sure if you are right or not. Watch and see if the hero and heroine come to the same conclusion you did or are they on the wrong clue. I enjoyed seeing how the story unfolded, the strengths and weaknesses of the characters. How the researched the clues from Sarah's murder. Definitely recommend this book for mystery, suspense or murder buffs. Oh yes, there is some romance to entice you. I read this book in less than a day. No one asked me to review this book and all opinions and statements are my own. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
